How to Install Motorized Roller Shades

Installing a motorized roller shade takes most people under 30 minutes per window, and no electrician is required. The process has three parts: mounting the brackets, hanging the shade, and pairing the remote. Before you begin, read through the full guide so you know what to expect at each step. Gather these tools before you start:

• Ladder
• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Level
• Screwdriver
• Power drill
• Screws (included; wall anchors sold separately for drywall or plaster)
• Mounting brackets (included)

Before you start, lay out your hardware by window and confirm all parts are accounted for. If you're installing shades in multiple rooms, keep each window's hardware in its own labeled bag. Brackets and roller tubes are sized per window and aren't interchangeable.

Inside mount sets the shade within the window frame, for a streamlined, built-in look. Outside mount places the shade on the wall or ceiling above the frame, fully blocking light gaps at the edges and working when a frame is too shallow for inside mount.

Before drilling, confirm the surface can support the bracket weight. If you're anchoring into drywall or plaster rather than a stud, use a wall anchor rated for the shade's weight — anchors aren't included, since the right one depends on your wall type.

Mount each bracket with two screws.

• Inside mount: screw through the top of the bracket into the window frame.
• Outside mount: screw through the back of the bracket into the wall or ceiling.

Use a level across both brackets before you drill. Uneven brackets cause the fabric to telescope, roll unevenly to one side, which can damage the shade over time.

Shades with a valence use a slightly different bracket profile than standard-roll shades, but the leveling step matters equally for both.

Once brackets are level and secured, lift the shade into place and snap the roller tube into the brackets — standard-roll and valence styles both seat the same way, front-to-back. Check that the fabric is centered on the tube and that the shade hangs horizontally before letting go.

Charge and prep:

1. Charge the motor with the included USB cable. A blinking LED means the battery is low.
2. Insert the included cell battery into the back of the remote.

Power on: Press and hold the motor's program button for 1 second. A solid red light means the motor is on. (If the motor jogs twice on its own, that's normal; it just means it isn't yet connected to a remote.)

Pair the remote to the shade:

1. Choose a channel on the remote.
2. Press the motor's program button for 1 second — the shade jogs once.
3. Press UP on the remote — the shade jogs again. The remote and shade are now paired.

Setting limits tells the motor exactly how far to raise and lower the shade.

1. Press the remote's program button — the motor jogs once.
2. Hold UP to raise the shade to your desired top position, then press STOP.
3. Press the program button again — the motor jogs to confirm the upper limit is saved.
4. Hold DOWN to lower the shade to your desired bottom position, then press STOP.
5. Press the program button, then press it again — the motor jogs twice to confirm the lower limit is saved.

Optional — set a third limit position (a favorite in-between height, like half-open): after setting upper and lower limits, repeat the same jog-and-confirm sequence at your preferred in-between position.

Once limits are set, the remote's 25%, 50%, and 75% buttons move the shade to those exact points automatically; handy for matching shades across a room.

To operate several shades from one remote button, assign them to the same channel:

1. Pick a spare channel for the group.
2. Press and hold the motor's program button until it jogs, then press the remote's program button — the shade jogs again to confirm pairing.
3. Repeat for each additional shade using the same channel. Every shade on that channel will then move together.

Each shade still needs its own upper and lower limits set individually before grouping.

Reset the motor: Press and hold the program button for 3 seconds until it jogs, release, then hold it again for 10 seconds until it jogs a second time. The motor is now fully reset.

Erase remote memory: Press the remote's program button and STOP button together for 4 seconds. The motor jogs to confirm the memory has been cleared.
