How to Measure for Inside Mount Shades

Measuring your windows correctly before ordering is the most important step in getting custom shades that fit and look the way they should. Inside mount shades sit within the window frame rather than on the wall above it, creating a clean, recessed look that highlights the window's architecture. Getting the measurements right ensures your shade fits precisely.

This guide walks you through exactly how to measure for Shade Love's inside mount shades.

Before You Begin, Check Your Window Depth

Inside mount shades require sufficient window depth to accommodate the headrail. Before measuring width or height, confirm that your window frame is at least 2½ inches deep. If your windows are shallower than 2½ inches, an outside mount installation is recommended instead.

Step 1: Measure the Inside Width

Measure the inside width of your window frame, from the inner edge on the left to the inner edge on the right, at three points: the top, the middle, and the bottom.

Record all three measurements and use the smallest of the three. This is the measurement you'll enter into the Shade Love configurator. Then round down to the nearest ⅛ of an inch.

Why measure at three points? Window frames are rarely perfectly square. Measuring at three points accounts for any variation and ensures your shade will fit without forcing or gaps.

Step 2: Measure the Inside Height

Measure the inside height of your window frame, from the inner top edge to the inner bottom edge, at three points: the left side, the center, and the right side.

Record all three measurements and use the smallest of the three. Round down to the nearest ⅛ of an inch.

Note: If you already have a shade or blind installed and are replacing it, do not use the existing shade's dimensions; measure the window frame directly for the most accurate fit.

Entering Your Measurements

Once you have your width and height, you're ready to configure your shade. Shade Love's configurator automatically deducts a small allowance from your measurements, so you only need to enter the exact window dimensions, and the shade is made to fit correctly inside the frame without any additional adjustments on your end.

FAQs

Q: What is an inside mount shade?
A: An inside mount shade is installed within the window frame rather than on the wall above or outside the frame. This creates a clean, recessed look that frames the window neatly and allows the window trim and architecture to remain visible. Inside mount is the most popular choice for windows with attractive molding or deep frames.

Q: What is the minimum depth required for an inside mount shade?
A: Windows must be at least 2½ inches deep to accommodate an inside mount shade. This depth is needed to fit the headrail within the frame without it protruding into the room. If your window is shallower than 2½ inches, an outside mount is recommended.

Q: Do I need to deduct anything from my measurements for an inside mount shade?
A: No, enter your exact window measurements into the Shade Love configurator. The configurator automatically accounts for the necessary clearance so the shade fits correctly inside the frame. Do not deduct anything manually.

Q: Why do I measure at three points instead of one?
A: Window frames are rarely perfectly square. Measuring at only one point can result in a shade that is too wide or too narrow. Measuring at three points — top, middle, and bottom for width; left, center, and right for height — captures any variation across the frame and ensures you enter the most accurate dimension.

Q: What if my three measurements are different?
A: Use the smallest of the three measurements for both width and height. This ensures the shade will fit within the frame at its narrowest point without binding or forcing.

Q: What is the difference between inside mount and outside mount shades?
A: Inside mount shades sit within the window frame, creating a recessed, architectural look. Outside mount shades are installed on the wall above the window frame, covering the frame entirely and making the window appear larger. Outside mount is a better choice for windows with limited depth, windows without attractive trim, or rooms where maximum light blocking is a priority.
